Leadership Sharing Sessions
On August 5th and 13th, 2021, VDMI held a Leadership Sharing Session with Bapak Ronny H Mustamu (Director Quadrant Consulting). For two and a half hours, the participants were guided to learn how to be good leaders. The participants were grantees and alumni from Wira Wacana Christian University Sumba.
Leaders are ordinary people that can do extraordinary things. So, to be a leader, we should know ourselves and decide what type of leader we are. There are 5 types of leaders. First, lead with modeling/examples like Oskar Schindler. Second, lead with orders like Adolf Hitler. Third, lead with communication like Martin Luther King Jr. Fourth, lead with power like Vladimir I Lenin. Finally, lead with Inspiring like Mother Teresa.
Leadership keeps continuing but the leader changes. The organization or the company should continue growth even if the leaders change. So, as leaders, we should ensure that the organization that we left sustains even after we are absent. Moreover, leadership is about grit. Many smart people have never been leaders. When we become a leader, ask ourselves, is there something new that we brought to the organization?
Udayani Fraukje Para asked how can we encourage subordinates who do not like their job? Bapak Ronny suggested, “The rule of thumb, try to accommodate first (face safing way out).” Leaders should know their team. First, we should identify the team’s talents. If we think that our subordinate asks to move to another division that he/she is good at, accommodate! However, if we know that they will not be able to perform well, try to accommodate them by giving them the least responsibility in the new division.
