Series of Psychology (Part 1: Disruption – May 31, 2022)
On May 31, 2022, VDMI held a Series of Psychology (Part 1), delivered by Kuriake Kharismawan, a faculty member of Psychology Department, Soegijapranata Catholic University of Semarang. There were 100 participants in this session. This session discussed the disruption era. Due to the pandemic COVID-19 outbreak, the world has changed in all aspects of human life. Technology develops very quickly and it is predicted that some jobs will disappear in the coming years as industry replaces human resources with robots or artificial intelligence technology. One of the technological developments that have been prepared at this era is the metaverse. In the metaverse world, all of humanity will be able to connect directly, our hologram can appear in another room to meet other people in other places, while physically we are at home.
To deal with this very rapid disruption, participants must hone the required soft skills needed: adaptive, creative, toughness and enthusiasm. Adaptive personality is owned by people who are easy to change. To be adaptive, we must get used to being flexible in facing various changes and quickly adapting. Furthermore, creativity is needed in facing the disruption era. Creative thinking is something out of the ordinary so that many original ideas are raised. In the session, participants were asked to take an online creativity test to find out their creativity level. Toughness is a big capital for us to be able to reach the ladder of success. Enthusiasm is a desire that drives us not to give up easily. These four soft skills should be developed and possessed in order to be ready to face the disruption era.
Intelligence is needed in the future, but networking is more important because fortune can flow through our network. For that, joining an organization is also recommended by the facilitator. By joining an organization, participants will get used to meeting with other people and ready to collaborate with them. This is in line with Vincensius Jeradu’s sharing (grantee from Flores University). Vincensius shared about the benefits of joining an organization. He can learn to communicate in public, expand relationships with everyone, train his leadership skills and learn something new that is not obtained in the classroom.
In the Q&A session, many participants took part in the session. One of them was Kahfi Rizki (grantee from Bandung Institute of Technology) who asked about the facilitator’s experience during 1990 to 2000 when technology transition occurred and how he was able to survive the changes. Kuriake shared that he graduated when the monetary crisis happened in Indonesia. At that time, finding a job was very difficult, because there were many things that happened beyond predictions and estimates, but by trying to be adaptive and tough, he could face the storm of transition. At the end of the session, Kuriake asked the participants to do their assignment by reflecting and answering the following questions: 1).what are the job demands according to your field of study/ major study?; 2). What qualities are needed to meet that job demand? And 3). What strategies do you use to achieve the quality needed to meet the job demands? The assignment will be discussed in Session 2.
