Series of Scientific Writing (Part 3) March 9, 2022
On 9th March 2022, The Series of Scientific Writing discussed the structure of manuscripts, method and analysis. There are a lot of different studies, background or area, but the structure of scientific manuscript is similar across the disciplines. The structure of a manuscript started with an introduction, methodology, results, discussions, references, title, abstract, and authors. Like a cone, introduction is start board and narrow down. Started with the context of your research, then become more specific on findings and theory, and ended with your research question. Also, the introduction consisted of the reason why we need to research the topic or the gap of the existing studies.
Next, defining our methodology in research is also important. So, other scientists can clarify whether or not the results of the research are accounted for. In choosing the right method for your research, you can first try to research on the previous studies’ method sections. If you find a study with a good method, you use it for your method. Also, you can develop a new method and test it. Otherwise, you can the several experts and conclude their opinions. The method section consisted of four parts: design, sample, procedure, measure, statistic, and ethic.
Herliana (grantee Flores University) asking about the difference between a qualitative and quantitative methods in scientific research. Prof. Jan explained about the way both methods used on collecting data. When we don’t know yet about our research question, we can use qualitative method. It’s usually more investigative and explorative then quantitative method. We can use interview to collect data. Qualitative method usually used when you want to know about new research topic. On the other hand, quantitative method usually used when we already know what to do, like if we want to know about the relationship or the differences of two or more variables. Usually, we can collect data by spreading questionnaires and then we analyze it using statistical application and get the result analysis. Prof. Jan added with his research experience in Ciliwung. He explained that both of quantitative and qualitative method can be used together as a method in the same research. The qualitative method used for preliminary interview to find the research topic in Ciliwung. After that, quantitative method used to get answers from list of questions on the questionnaire.
The participants were given the assignment to write a SMART’s research questions inspired by Pak Jan’s vlog. Also, write the sample, procedure, and measure to answer the research questions. Send it to the address of the YVDMI before this Saturday.
